In 1906, Munktells Mekaniska Verkstads AB made the first piece of construction machinery – a steam-powered road roller. Also Zettelmeyer began as early as 1910 to manufacture steam rollers.
In 1969 Ingersoll Rand starts compaction manufacturing in West Colwell NJ USA. The acquisition of Ingersoll Rand's road development equipment division was finalized in 2007.
The first Volvo branded compactors were launched in the beginning of 2008.
In 2013 the line of soil compactors has been restructured to simplify model designations as Volvo expands the product range to include Tier4i / Stage 3b compactors, and to align with the product designation policy. The new nomenclature has been simplified to create a single designation for each model family. Suffix’s have also been removed from product names, and features such as “D”, “DX” and “F” have become selectable options instead of standalone model designations.
