Volvo CE joins new strategic alliance to accelerate zero-emission solutions in Europe

In a united effort to accelerate the development and availability of zero-emission solutions in Europe, Volvo CE is joining a diverse group of electric pioneers to establish a new roundtable on open market standards.

The OEM roundtable has been set up by electric foundation ENI (Emissionfree Network Infrastructure) and smart charging association ElaadNL – and brings together players across the construction equipment value chain. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Volvo CE and other founding members at Bauma 2025.

Its aims are to:

  • Foster pre-competitive collaboration between companies to discuss and implement the scaling up of zero-emission construction solutions
  • Establish and publish industry standards on various design aspects of larger electric machines, and
  • Formulate a plan for continuation of the group beyond 2025.

Karl-Uebel

Karl Uebel, Expert Electromobility System Architect, who will be Volvo CE’s main representative in the collaboration, said: “If we are to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission solutions for the benefit of our customers, we must foster deep cooperation across the value chain. This Roundtable will support our continued development of electric solutions by allowing us to establish industry standards that support our customers in their unique transformation journeys.”

Electrification brings important health and environmental benefits by helping to eliminate carbon emissions and harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).

Establishing open market standards for electric equipment

Standardizing electric equipment will not only result in higher levels of compatibility and safety within an electrified, multi-brand construction site, but also help to accelerate the transformation.

The adoption of zero-emission construction equipment is moving at a different pace across European markets. The roundtable will therefore support in establishing open standards before production scales up in those regions where electrification is in its infancy.

A typical example of standardization would be to create the same smart charging protocol across different brands and machines – an initiative Volvo CE pioneered in 2023 with its 48 volt charging protocol. By deploying these protocols more uniformly across all construction equipment suppliers, it will make it even easier for customers to make the shift to electric.

Progress on the work accomplished within the roundtable will be announced in due course.
