For the last 80 years, Stena Recycling has taken great strides in making Sweden the posterchild of recycling on a global scale. And its commitment to a better world starts from within. Its strategy to replace some of their diesel machines with Volvo CE electric machines is a game changer when it comes to cutting emissions and increasing efficiency.
Leading this change is Marika Björnum, Head of Purchasing at Stena Recycling. According to Marika, the use of electric machines is a win-win. From reduced fuel costs and increased efficiency through to zero emissions and reduced vibrations – Volvo electric machines are not just great for business but for the environment too.
The Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator has been working non-stop for over 3,000 hours at the company’s industrial plastic recycling facility. Taking breaks only for quick charges, it has moved over 20 tons of recycled material every day. Replacing its diesel predecessor, it reduces 83% in energy costs and cuts CO2 emissions by about 21 tons every year. The compact design, near silent operation, and the fact that it’s emission-free makes it the perfect choice for carrying out work indoors at the facility.
Marika says: “To put it in perspective, if we stacked up the material this machine moves, in just one week it would be taller than the Eiffel tower! Isn’t that amazing!”
