Volvo CE supports Earth Hour: every second, every day

Landmarks around the world have been switching off their lights as part of the WWF's Earth Hour event to inspire collective action on climate change. Volvo CE also played its part, with the company’s employees flicking the switch at some of its facilities worldwide.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has participated in the recent Earth Hour event, with its facilities around the world turning off lights for a symbolic 60 minutes, as a gesture in support of climate change initiatives.

This global ‘powercut’ was in support of the WWF’s Earth Hour, an annual event that encourages individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of their commitment to the planet. Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Sydney Opera House and hundreds of other landmark buildings around the world were all willingly plunged into darkness for 60 minutes on March 19th.

The Earth Hour initiative highlights potential for saving energy. “Turning off lights or not having equipment idling when not needed harms nobody – and yet cuts CO2 and saves money. It’s a no brainer,” says Niklas Nillroth, VP of environment & sustainability at Volvo CE. “It’s often the simple stuff of minimizing energy use and reducing waste that makes the biggest difference. And not just at work – we should be applying this philosophy in our private lives, turning off lights, using public transport and being less wasteful. Volvo CE is playing its part, but everybody can – and should – contribute to making the world a more sustainable planet to live on.”
