Volvo commits to improving fuel efficiency at press conference

Volvo has used a gathering of leading members of the press to underscore its increased focus on improving fuel efficiency across its entire range of construction equipment.

17th May 2010, Gothenburg, Sweden. At a press conference held today, Volvo Construction Equipment has outlined its commitment and strategy to improving fuel efficiency across its entire range of construction equipment. The company is adopting a four pronged approach to tackling the issue, using a range of fuel saving solutions that encompass engines, systems, operator behaviour and future technology. The company is maximizing its investment in new technology to become a market leader in efficiency and environmental protection by focusing on these four main elements:

“We are delivering on our promise of increasing fuel efficiency across our product range,” says Arvid Rinaldo of Volvo Construction Equipment’s global communication team, who led the press conference. “Through continuous innovation we are delivering fuel efficient solutions while at the same time boosting productivity and profitability for our customers. Offering practical and effective solutions to protect the environment, Volvo Construction Equipment is the partner for progress in the construction industry.”

Raising the bar on fuel efficiency

  • Engines – New diesel engines will be equipped with Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology (V-ACT) to optimize combustion efficiency and reduce emissions. V-ACT features an advanced fuel injection system, a new and more effective air management system and enhanced engine management. A switchable Internal Exhaust Gas Recirculation function (I-EGR) and Tier 4i/Stage 3B emissions technology will lower particle matter.

With over 100,000 hours of testing done Volvo expects fuel efficiency gains of around 5% depending on machine and application.

  • Systems – Volvo has launched a revolutionary fuel saving feature called OptiShift, which is being introduced for the L150F-L220F range of wheel loaders. OptiShift equipment will feature new torque converters with lock-up and free wheel stator and Volvo patented Reverse By Braking (RBB) technology, which reduces fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent.
  • Operator behaviour Volvo’s Eco Operator* program is focused on training operators to develop an environmentally-friendly style of driving – through less accelerating and braking and by using the most economical engine speed range. This not only reduces emissions, but also cuts fuel consumption by up to five to 25 per cent –without affecting productivity.
  • Future technology – Volvo is advancing in many areas, one of them being hybrid technology, which will save yet more fuel.
