EU Data Act

The EU Data Act seeks to create a fairer and more efficient digital economy by making more data available for use within the market. It requires manufacturers of connected products and service providers to make your generated raw and pre-processed data easily available to you.

For Users and Customers there is information on which data that is accessible in the Pre-Contractual Information document applicable for the respective products and services. The data is made available through Volvo CE’s EU Data Act APIs, as further described below.

PCI - Wheel loader
PCI - Compact Wheel Loader
PCI - Excavator
PCI - Compact Excavator
PCI - Articulated Hauler
PCI - Rigid Hauler
PCI - Compactor
PCI - Machines no longer manufactured
PCI - Digital services

Data in scope for sharing under the Data Act is data that is “raw” or “pre-processed”. Raw data refers to unprocessed, automatically generated data points, while pre-processed data is modified to be understandable and usable for further analysis (Data Act recital 15).

The data accessible for your specific product or service is further detailed in the applicable Pre-Contractual Information document.

Note that depending on the specific customizations, add-ons selected, technical progress, and additional services acquired, the types, frequencies, and amounts of data gathered and processed may vary.

Who is entitled to data under EU Data Act?

  • User is defined as a natural or legal person that owns a connected product or to whom temporary rights to use that connected product have been contractually transferred (e.g.through a rent or lease contract), or that receives a related service.
  • The Data Act applies within the EU, meaning that the User shall be established in the EU, the connected product(s) shall have been placed on the market in the EU and any third-party data recipient shall also be EU-based.

Data is made accessible over APIs in 2 weeks rolling window after a first data sharing request has been completed for a specific machine. As unpacking collected data is done every 24 hours, the API will contain updated data with the same interval. Historical Data is data older than 2 weeks and is available via manual requests.

Access Volvo CE's EU Data Act APIs

Users with a Volvo Connect Account
The EU Data Act data collection needs to be enabled for each machine you want to collect the data from. You can access all enabled machines’ generated data (raw and pre-processed) via Volvo CE’s related EU Data Act APIs.

To get the APIs and data, you need to access your Volvo Connect Account as an End Customer Manager. Visit the “My Machines” and enable “Manage Connectivity Data” in the Machine Details (using the menu-option), wait for the request validation* and invitation** to the Developer Portal, complete the setup in the Developer Portal and request your data via the API. Your access to the data will be subject to the Data Sharing Agreement.

*You may be required to provide details of machine ownership and/or organizational details to validate your eligibility to the data.
** Invitation to the Developer Portal for EU Data Act is only applicable the first time you enable Connectivity Data for a machine.

Users without a Volvo Connect Account

If you are a machine owner that has not yet registered for an account at https://connect.volvoce.com then please contact your local dealer to ensure your machine ownership is registered.

Find your local dealer: Volvo Construction Equipment Global Dealer Locator

Otherwise, for example if you are renting a machine, use the self-service to register a Volvo Connect Account.

Third Party Vendors
A customer must actively request Volvo CE to onboard a specific Third-Party Vendor and connect it to the customer’s machines with Connectivity Data enabled. This is done through customer support function in Volvo Connect.

The customer will be requested to provide details of the Third Party Vendor as well as a letter of authorization. Volvo CE will contact the Third-Party Vendor for complementary details, a review of its eligibility and confirmation of acceptance of the Data Sharing Agreement, including applicable cost compensation.

When the Third-Party Vendor has been onboarded, the customer will be prompted in the Customer Portal to confirm that the Third-Party Vendor’s connected app is approved for their EU Data Act machine data. This prompt will appear the next time the customer accesses either Volvo Connect or Service Marketplace.
