PU40 Volvo Power unit

Volvo PU40 is a small mobile power unit suitable to charge compact machines with while off the grid. It can be used in the same way as a power bank for mobile phones, ie you charge PU40 from the grid where possible and use it to charge machines when there is no grid power available. The PU40 is small and easy to move so you can take it to wherever your machine is located. Thanks to 230V sockets, it can also provide energy to the rest of your site.

Features & Benefits

Charging Volvo electric compact machines With the PU40 you have the flexibility to both fast charge your machine with the DC 17kW output or charge using the AC output of 2.3kW, without the need for a grid connection. How long it takes to charge your electric compact excavator or wheel loaders depends on which option you choose.

Charging the L20 and L25 Electric

For the L20 Electric, which has a battery capacity of 33kWh it takes 1 hour 45 minutes using the DC output (17kW) and 11.5 hours when using the AC output (2,3kW). Charging the L25 electric, with a battery capacity of 40kW will take 2 hours using DC output and 14.5 hours when using AC output.

Charging ECR18, EC18 and ECR25 Electric

The ECR18 with a battery capacity of 16kWh, takes 1 hour to charge using DC output and 6.5 hours using AC output. The EC18 and ECR25 have a battery capacity of 20kWh. Charging EC18 with DC output will take 1 hour and 15 minutes and 8.5 hours using AC output. Charging ECR25 with DC output will take 1 hour and 7.5 hours using AC output. Note: There is a total AC output of 3kW from two outlets (2,3kW and 0,7kW). Charging Volvo compact electric equipment using the 2,3kW outlet means the possibility exists to charge other electric tools using the 0,7kW outlet at the same time.

How to charge the mobile Volvo PU40 power unit The PU40 has a battery capacity of 40 Kwh and gives the possibility to charge your compact electric equipment and electric tools anywhere- even at jobsites with little or no grid connection. The PU40 weighs 900kg and is easily transported. When charging is required move the power unit to a location with grid connection and charge using either a 17kW DC fast charger or with a maximum AC input of 6kW.

Charging power unit with AC

How long it takes to charge the PU40 using AC input depends on the power available; up to a max charging power of 6kW*. Typical charging times are as follows- (i) with a domestic socket (2,3kW) charging will take 14,5 hours (ii) using a 16A 1phase socket (3,68kW) will take 9.5 hours and (iii) using either a 16A 3 phase socket* or a 32 A 3 phase socket* will take 6 hours. *The PU40 comes with a 6kW on-board charger which means the maximum charging power is 6kW, even if higher power is available.

Fast charger

You can fast charge the PU40 power unit using a 17kW DC charger in only 2 hours; meaning you can quickly return power to your jobsite.

How does the PU40 power unit work Here you can see how you can charge your mobile power unit from Volvo and how you can use the energy stored in the power unit. You can charge the power unit with both AC and DC and charge your electric construction machines with the energy saved in the power unit.

Slow charging the unit

The power unit can be charged on a slow continuous power via a 6kW AC charging cable. This is the most cost effective method for charging up the power unit during off-peak periods. In this way customers can save up energy within the unit to charge their electric machines during peak times, when power direct from the grid is more expensive.

Fast charging the unit

An alternative charging solution if a speedier option is required is the 17kW DC charger. This enables the power unit to be fully charged in less time than the 6kW slow charger. It is also possible to use this charging station for indoor use.

Fast charging the machines

Thanks to the integrated 17kW DC fast charger, the PU40 can recharge Volvo compact electric excavators in as little as an hour, or recharge Volvo compact wheel loaders in two hours.

Slow charging the machines

A 3kW AC outlets are also available for a slow re-charge of Volvo machines, such as the EC18 Electric, ECR18 Electric and ECR25 Electric excavators or the L20 Electric and L25 Electric wheel loaders. Furthermore the slow charging part of the solution is brand agnostic, meaning it is possible to slow charge non-Volvo machines and other electrical equipment.
