Charging anxiety? We have a solution for your charging needs on your work site!

Thinking about going electric for your next construction project? Then it is only natural that you will have many questions on charging. You probably have questions over what charging options there are, when and how to charge, and how you can fit charging into your day while maintaining your productivity. We are here to guide you through this process and make it easier to make the transition to zero emission solutions.

To optimize the operation of your electric construction machines it is important to plan ahead. Charging planning doesn’t have to be difficult. It is just the same with anything new- it may be a little strange at the start but very soon becomes a natural part of your routine.

To make this switch there are just two very simple steps you need to take. When you follow these steps, you can enjoy all the power and performance but with the added benefits electric machines provide such as no exhaust fumes, lower noise, and vibration. So, let’s get started!

1. Think how your machines work today

The first step is to look at your current operations and needs. What type of work is your machine undertaking and for how long? What are the site conditions? What power source do you have available – is this on site or off site? All these factors have an influence on how much energy you will be expending and therefore the expected runtime of your machine.

2. Calculate your requirements

Once you have collected this information, then the next step is to calculate when and where to charge, for how long and what charging options you will use.
We can help you with this part, as we have created easy-to-use Runtime Calculator. Enter in the information above and we can provide an example on how your charging could look like during your workday. This calculator will also provide an indication of which charging options you will need for your workload or application.

Quick points on charging!

  • For most job sites, overnight charging is usually the preferred choice. In normal applications – and particularly for our compact construction equipment – we often find this is enough to get a full day’s work complete.
  • For more intense operations you may need an ‘opportunity charge’ during a lunch break. This may mean you require a fast charger or if grid access is limited a mobile power unit. But don’t worry we have got you covered. We provide AC, DC and portable chargers. See here for more information about:
  • Our machines charge quickly - for example our electric compact machines can charge from 0-80% in 1-1.5 hours, giving you enough power to last a full working day.
  • We recommend keeping the battery range between 20-80% as it takes longer to charge your machine when the battery level is outside of this range.
  • For more information and tips on charging you will find that there is a wealth of information available about charging construction equipment.
  • For tips on optimizing the performance of your compact electric equipment during winter see our blog article Learn how to maximise the performance of your compact electric construction machine when it is cold outside!

Want to hear what machine operators are saying about charging?

Listen to Richard Sjöblom, operator of the EC230 Electric to hear first-hand.

So, while you may have to make one or two small changes to your day, you will be pleasantly surprised at just how easily charging fits into your schedule and becomes a normal part of your every day.

For us at Volvo CE, we see the total solution - the development of electric construction machines and the right charging solutions to power them come hand in hand.
