Singapore and Japan are ready for the arrival of Volvo CE electric machines

The busy construction sites of Singapore and Japan are about to welcome new alternatives for quieter and more sustainable working, with the launch of the first electric machines from Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE).

The Volvo L25 Electric compact wheel loader and Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator will launch in Japan and Singapore in late May/early June, as Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) continues its roll-out of electric machines into new markets.

In late May, the compact electric machines will be unveiled in Japan for the first time, making their debut at the 5th Construction & Survey Productivity Improvement EXPO (CSPI-EXPO) in Tokyo. The first units in Japan will be delivered to a local rental company and these and future machines will be sold and supported by local distributor Yamazaki Machinery.

Just a matter of days later is the official launch in Singapore. At a launch ceremony on Sentosa Island on June 07, attendees will get first-hand insights into how these machines facilitate a cleaner and healthier work environment thanks to the near-silent operation, an absence of exhaust fumes and an operating station free from vibrations.

Since the compact electric wheel loaders and excavators from Volvo CE first became available in 2019, they have been steadily rolled out in Europe and North America. Then, last year, the first machines arrived in Asia, with the launch in South Korea. Now, considering its  acceleration towards more sustainable infrastructure development, Singapore has been identified as the next ideal market. Similarly in Japan, where 823 local governments have signed up for the 2050 Zero Carbon Cities in Japan initiative, interest is also expected to be high.

Worry-free working

Both machines are offered with a range of charging options to ensure maximum uptime, while also providing almost identical power and performance to their diesel equivalents.

The L25 Electric compact wheel loader has an integrated 6 kW on-board charger which enables the 40-kWh lithium-ion 48V battery pack to be fully boosted in under six hours. An optional fast off-board charger can manage it in less than two hours. The battery on the machine can handle up to 2500 charge cycles, accounting for the likely life expectancy of the loader, and will typically provide up to eight hours of work on a full charge, including operating at its maximum 20 kph. For the ECR25 Electric compact excavator, the 20-kWh battery array enables up to four hours of effective work per charge.

“With our electric construction machines, ways of working are transformed.” said AM Muralidharan, Head of Productivity & Retail Development Asia, Volvo CE, “As governments and communities increasingly demand quiet and emissions-free machinery on their local projects, we are taking the lead in making these demands a reality.”
